Costume Design

Who am I, as a Costume Designer?

I am a designer with experience in both deaf and hearing shows, and shows that are a mix of language use. I communicate clearly with both hearing and deaf/hoh individuals. I love the design constraints that disabled theater creates- I believe that it makes the designs look more visually appealing and cohesive on stage.

“Disabled design creates thoughtful, intricate designs aligning perfectly with the actor, creating an uniquely iconic look”

I am a costume builder as well as designer- I have experience in pattern drafting and draping, as well as working with foam, dyes, and all sorts of domestic and industrial machines. I also use 3D modeling software to create hard costume pieces and can use a 3D printer to bring it to life.

I have worked with costume teams (as in The 39 Steps) as well as done the entire costuming work myself (as in IWBO and Concord Floral), and I appreciate both for their nuances. Working by myself lets me have full perfect control over everything because I am the one sewing and creating. But, I love teaching people, and working with a costume shop team allowed me to delegate tasks and teach people how to perform tasks I wanted them to do.

It is also important to understand how to create a safe space for actors- to use gender affirming language, to collaborate, and to provide opportunities to give consent. I believe that costume designers are a big part of who can advocate for the actor’s comfort.
